I’m running for Vice President because I want to help make the Geophysics Society a place where we can link what we learn in lectures to what’s happening out in the field and industry.
One of my main goals is to bring in more industry involvement, more talks, networking events, and informal sessions with people working in exploration, energy, mining, and environmental geophysics. Hearing directly from professionals gives valuable insight into what careers in geophysics really look like, and how we can get there.
I also want to help us get more hands-on experience. It would be great to organise field trips and practical workshops where we can see geophysical methods in action. Whether through small survey demos or collaborations with other universities, these experiences would make what we study feel much more real. After a year of networking, I’m now friends with the leading members of the Oxford and CSM geological societies, which could help make this happen.
Another big aim of mine is to set up a student chapter of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). This would give members access to global events, travel funding, and an international network, a great opportunity to grow and get involved beyond campus.
Finally, I’d like to expand the society’s reach to students from other departments. Collaborating across disciplines would help us grow in both size and knowledge, with new perspectives enriching discussions on geophysics-related topics.
