I'm Dev. At the University of Manchester, I headed peer support efforts focused on helping first-year undergraduates adjust to university life. I understand the feeling of needing help, and as AWO, I’d love to be your reliable source of advice.
As AWO, I will have two focuses. The first is ensuring staff are aware of all academic and welfare issues that PGT engineering students face. Engineering at Imperial is stressful; students' welfare is paramount. My second focus will be on holding the course reps accountable and ensuring they collect enough points of view from students.
MSc students come from across the world. In my first week, I met students from 5 different continents; thus, it's no surprise that academic issues will arise. As AWO, I will make it my duty to ensure staff are aware of the academic issues students face.
While I would not be your first port of call, I will hear all issues the course reps bring to me and communicate these to staff. Whether the issues are for specific modules or the whole course structure, no issue is too big or small. Having worked with academic staff, I recognise that the largest feedback issue is staff not knowing about student problems, but with me, this would not be an issue.
