Chemical Engineering (UG): Year One Academic Representative

Hi! I’m Mona.

What drives me most pursuing ChemEng is its application. I’ve identified that my point of interest is sustainable energy, and I’ve pushed to take on different work experience around that. You can expect the same proactiveness from me as your Academic rep: I think Imperial’s the perfect place for our exploration beyond lectures, and even though we all chose ChemEng, everyone wants to apply it differently- so I want to push for maximal opportunities to engage with industry and research in real-world applications.

I was drawn to ChemEng because I love understanding processes meticulously—projects like the conversion of quartzite to polysilicon wafers and the workings of wastewater treatment plants fascinate me—that attention to detail is something you can count on. Having lived in seven countries, I’ve learned to adapt and collaborate with diverse backgrounds, skills I strengthened whilst running activities like Book Club as part of my school’s leadership team.

As first years, we feel stressed that we won’t “make the best” of the golden chance of studying at Imperial- as your Academic Rep, I’ll make opportunities visible. Also, I think it’s gobsmacking how much we have to learn from each other: we’ve all pursued a niche interest or project that’s got us our place here, and as an Academic Rep, I’d love for us to collaborate around this, organising smaller-group interactions like lunches with people interested in similar fields.

I’m always eager to take on more, and I’ll approach this role with dynamism and reliability!
