Chemical Engineering (UG): Year One Academic Representative

Hey everyone! :) My name is Edward, and I’ll be running to be your Y1 AcademicRep.

Over the last three years, I served as Student Council President (SCP) at my school, representing over 300 students (Grades 5-12) from more than 20 different countries. Not only has this been a major responsibility, but it has also been one that I have genuinely enjoyed. I hope to continue this commitment at university to make a difference for YOU, with suggestions from YOU.

During my time as SCP, I:

  • Led student council meetings, advocating for student rights
  • Voted on academic reforms with other SCPs, passing recommendations to politicians
  • Participated in various committees (Environmental, Staff, Parent Advisory, Board)
  • Initiated student-led projects, such as volunteer tutoring services
  • Organised student events and secured sponsorships (annual balls, Halloween, etc.)

Having a British father and a Malaysian-Chinese mother, while attending a German school in Norway, is something I hope to leverage to better understand the demands of our diverse student body. As AcademicRep, I will push to make a real difference. Here are some areas I believe should be prioritised:

  • Full transparency regarding grading criteria and module expectations
  • Ensuring regular feedback loops between students and lecturers
  • Bridging the gap between theory and application
  • Exposure to specialised career paths

I would be honoured to represent this year’s ChemEng cohort. I won’t just listen; I will act on behalf of everyone in the year. I am confident I can understand, react, and deliver.

- Edward, hopefully your AcademicRep to be ;)
