Materials (UG): Year One Academic Representative

If you pay attention, you will likely see me in the front of every lecture, often with a snack or pencil in hand. I was born and raised in Singapore, but lived in California for the last 7 years. Experiencing all these different education systems makes me believe that education should be intuitive and accessible, not vague and overwhelming.

I promise I’m very friendly. I love meeting new people and talking, so you would not have to worry about finding me to complain about academic problems. I can also listen to and speak Mandarin, although I haven’t studied Mandarin since I moved to America. Still, this means I understand both the struggle of learning a new language and how moving to a new country can affect academics.

I’m already aware of problems in our course teachings, like professors talking too fast or glossing over concepts. The difference in professors’ background knowledge and our background knowledge as students means that certain concepts can seem simple to professors but absolutely foreign to us. As Academic year representative, I will bridge that gap in perception of knowledge and bring up as many complaints or issues as you have. I believe technical concepts can have intuitive explanations, and will push for professors or resources to explain that intuition rather than brush over it.

Vote Francis Lee for Academic Year 1 Representative! I wrote this in the middle of the night so I couldn’t come up with a good slogan, sorry.
