Tamsin Massiah Howard
I’m Tamsin, first year medic but more importantly, from the sunny island of Barbados!!!
Our islands may be small but we are an incredibly diverse set of people rich in culture. With me as Caribbean officer, ICACS will celebrate this so there’s no question of what the C in ACS stands for…
Uplifting, celebrating and uniting our Caribbean and African communities is something I’m VERY eager to champion in this role (even if we can’t agree on plantIN or plantAIN).
Ways I plan to achieve this:
Education and inspiration
- debate and discussion events similar to BKCHAT where we explore and compare the Caribbean and African experiences - what can we learn from each other? are there traditions, stories, issues within our communities that we share?
- speakers from the West Indies at career and networking events!!
Impact - how can our society support both our wider Caribbean and African communities?
- promoting awareness and supporting blood donation efforts to help those in our communities affected by sickle cell
- fundraising for hurricane relief for frequently affected Caribbean countries
- connecting with Caribbean and African owned small businesses to support our people!
Events
- if there’s jollof, meat pie and plantAIN, you’re also going to see rice and peas, dumplings, macaroni pie, roti, plantIN...
- you WILL be hearing reggae, ska, soca amongst the afrobeats and amapiano
and I want to hear from YOU too, I’m eager for all members to have influence in what events, initiatives, projects ACS can implement to honour the Caribbean, Africa and African diaspora.
