Mountaineering: Diversity & Inclusion officer

Hi, I'm Rafi and I'd love to be the next Diversity and Inclusion Officer! This year, going on the gender inclusive climbing trip and monthly climbing socials has been really inspiring. These experiences have fostered a sense community within the society and made me feel more welcome. It has motivated me to get more involved with making a positive impact, growing inclusive spaces and empowering more people to join.

My goals are to:

  • Continue the annual girls and gender inclusive trip tradition.
  • Continue and grow the monthly girls and gender inclusive bouldering social.
  • Organise socials for other underrepresented groups in climbing such as POC and LGBTQ+ people.
  • Organise more introductory and teaching sessions to break down barriers in joining the club for beginners.

As a member of our competition team for the last 3 years, I’m also committed to making competitive climbing at Imperial more inclusive. Every year we've struggled to get enough girls to compete and I want to change this. To build a larger and more inclusive women’s team, I want to:

  • Advertise the team tryouts more effectively. Few people even know we have a team and I want to share more information about how it works and what competition climbing is.
  • Organise a women’s team taster session to help people understand what it will be like, encourage more people to join and reduce nerves for tryouts.

I want everyone to feel like they belong in ICMC and I’m excited for the opportunity to help make this happen.
