Akshita Sapra
Hi, I’m Akshita, a first year medical student and I am so excited to be running for Events Officer! Growing up deeply involved in religious festivals, I have developed an appreciation for the feeling of community obtained by immersing yourself in Hinduism. At Imperial, I was thrilled to discover HinduSoc encapsulates this vibrant energy and creates opportunities to stay connected to our spiritual roots. Every event is memorable and celebrates our traditions on a grand scale, and this is something that I would like to carry forward!
In addition to the incredible Garba, Diwali and Holi events already marked on everyone’s calendars, I have some ideas to further capture the diversity and depth of our festivals.
- Dance showcase - as someone who is passionate about Bollywood, Bhangra, and a trained Bharatanatyam dancer, I would love to organise an event where the many different forms of dance are showcased as a journey through India.
- Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal… - these harvest festivals in January are celebrated in many different ways, and incorporating the key traditions from various regions of India in one event will allow everyone to experience the diversity of our culture.
- Diwali - in addition to the annual Diwali Ball, I hope to extend the celebrations further. For example, a representation of the Ramayana story to reflect on the key spiritual teachings behind Diwali.
I can’t wait to contribute to this amazing society as Events Officer and help make our events even more memorable and insightful for everyone!
