Plastic Surgery: Emergencies in Plastics Conference Chair

My interest in plastics lies largely within trauma, making holding this conference a great opportunity for me. I have experience leading a medical society which ran regular sessions, and sometimes involved bringing in a consultant speaker. I am confident I can identify and contact numerous professionals for the EiP conference. Having planned events for 200+ people, I understand the collaborations involved with different disciplines, and I intend to start planning early to secure the best options possible for the conference. This will also allow time for any challenges and changes to be accommodated, including room changes and speaker drop-outs. Having attended numerous conferences, I appreciate the improvements many require, as well as what makes them great. Using my experience as inspiration, and working with my partner, I am confident it will make for a brilliant EiP conference next year.

Actions:

  • Global theme to cover the variety of emergencies occuring worldwide, attracting Imperial’s diverse student population.
  • Focus on general surgery’s collaborations with Plastics, to reach students who are currently only looking at surgery.
  • VR workshops on emergencies, for practice under higher tensions.
  • For practiced delegates, give additional complex tasks (eg. Using a TRAM flap to reconstruct the breast) / make them complete tasks under real-world time pressures.
  • A raffle to fundraise for MSF-UK (supports emergency surgeries) – 10% of profits also go to MSF. Fundraise together leading up to the conference, through events including trivia nights and fun runs.
  • Advertise more widely through posters (mentioning an included lunch and raffle prizes).
