Malaysian: Welfare Officer

I remember first landing in London, overwhelmed with emotion, and struggling to adapt. I worried if I would be able to fit in and survive the great Imperial College. Fortunately, through events like Amazing Race and Potluck, I made great friends that helped me overcome this anxiety and loneliness, friends I made in ICUMS!

Now the opportunity has arisen, I am running for the position of ICUMS Welfare Officer, driven by the desire to support and guide newcomers through the transition from the comfort of home to exciting yet daunting university life. I will endeavour to make every member feel welcomed and valued by providing wellbeing resources, offering support, and fostering a warm community by creating a true home away from home.

If elected, I plan to:

1) Organise Winter and Easter Socials

  • Organise events and trips around UK
  • Collaborate with other societies within and outside of Imperial

2) Provide greater first month support to freshers

  • Senior guidance for navigating campus facilities, London transport system, accomodation and local shops
  • Peer-to-peer support
  • Guardian angel letter program

3) Modify Buddy Family system

  • Promote events by increasing incentives eg. termly to-do-list
  • More transparent point and reward system

4) Implement anonymous safe space

  • Safe platform to rant and receive advice from seniors
  • Rotation between senior volunteers

I believe past welfare efforts such as Sports day, Offer-holders e-guidebook, exam care packages and fresher’s camp should be continued and improved. Please refer to the internal manifesto for specifics. Thank you for your consideration.
