Ophthalmology: Chair

My name is Saad Ayub, a 3rd year medical student and the Year 2 coordinator for Muslim Medics. I’m running for chair of Ophthalmology society.

Ophthalmology society has been that bridge for students to show those, with a keen interest, more about the field. There are many beneficial initiatives we intend to continue, from the annual conference, to trips to the royal college, which give students a flavour of the specialty and an avenue to ask questions and seek knowledge. However, the society has more potential to benefit students. We aim to introduce a recorded teaching series, on the application process. To help students strengthen their portfolios while providing opportunities for senior students and clinicians to teach and give back.

I led a team of 12 final-year medical students and 2 GPs while working for MSID (Medical Schools in Difficulty), coordinating medical tutorial content for students in conflict zones globally. At Muslim Medics, I recruited senior students to deliver a series of 20 tutorials and have coordinated with external-organisations to arrange large events like an in-person BRS Mock. These roles required teamwork, organisation and soft-skills. It also helped develop leadership-skills, particularly while working as a Group-Supervisor for MSID, motivating those in my team and troubleshooting where problems arose to come up with solutions.

Working alongside Baraa Sheryanna, collectively, our shared interest and experiences have equipped us to take up the role in chairing, guiding the committee, and ensuring students with an interest in ophthalmology continue to benefit. Thank you.
