Debating: Vice President
Debating is a unique avenue for self-development in many fields. Hence, I strongly believe that as many people as possible should be provided access to it. For that to occur, the Imperial Debate Society must be well-run, and I believe I am the best candidate to ensure this. Here's why:
- I have consistently committed time to the society, having missed only two sessions over the past year. This matters because a key responsibility of the Vice President is handling logistical issues as they arise—a task that requires presence above all else. My regular attendance will also make me a familiar face, especially for new members, allowing me to efficiently coordinate signups and engagement.
- I will contribute to training sessions, leveraging my extensive preparatory materials (ask to see my Google Drive) and experience in delivering debate training to high schoolers. This will help me gauge attendees’ skill levels and ensure more accurate team allocations for competitions.
- I have previous experience running such societies - I was president of my high school's debate club and have been involved as equity in Imperial Juniors and Schools.
As VP, I resolve to:
- Ensure the society is run smoothly
- Further increase novice retention via initiatives like increasing opportunities for pro-ams within spars and competitions. Furthermore, I would attempt to decrease the tedium of camp for new attendees by pushing for more top-halfs and giving more mini-workshops on the motions set so that novices are not completely clueless.
