Elaine Ng
Biological Sciences (UG): Departmental Academic Representative
Hello my friends and friends I haven’t met yet. I’m Elaine, a 2nd year biological sciences student. I’m running for this position to further improve this department, building on the progress achieved by our previous Academic Rep!
Right now, I believe we need to address key issues that affect our academic experience:
- Why is coursework guidance so vague—forcing us to figure out what they want instead of focusing on the quality of our work?
- Why is lecture quality so inconsistent?
- Why doesn’t lecture content align with examinable content (e.g. BDC)?
- Why are there always errors in exam papers?
- Why does coursework score fluctuate based on marker instead of quality?
- Why do some personal tutors set meetings in an untimely manner?
- Why does our department sometimes only upload essential materials at the last minute?
- Why do we have statistics lessons but not any coding lessons?
Why I would be suitable for this role:
- I’m thorough — I notice every issue raised by students, and won’t let problems slip through
- I’m very approachable and an excellent communicator – whether it’s a casual chat or a formal concern, I will listen and act on your feedback.
- I’m very responsible – I'll back up words with actions
- As a biology parent and future final-year student, I know exactly what first-years and second-years are going through.
The workload is already tough—let’s remove unnecessary stress. Vote for me for a department that listens and improves!
(Thank you for reading my manifesto!)
