Hello everyone!
I am Huaihou, a Biomedical Engineering student running for the Union Council Representative this year. I was the Wellbeing Representative in my year group last year and am the current CGCU Spanner Bearer (Event Officer).
This role requires an active listener. One must stay wholeheartedly open to different voices and stay emotionally connected with students. At the same time, it also requires a brave speaker. Who once reflected upon the issue could stand out and voice for others.
As an international student, I understand this fear of standing out and speaking for yourself. I have been there.
My experience has made me suitable for identifying and detecting specific issues that might be faced by international students, such as language barriers, cultural integration, community engagement, settling in a new country, post-graduation pathways, etc. Furthermore, my fluency in Mandarin and Japanese can help me communicate with the wider student community.
I want to see our Union maximise their potential to make our campus a comfortable place for all students. If I get elected, I would:
- Promote a friendly learning environment for students transitioning to academic English.
- Advocate for inclusive welcome events for international newcomers.
- Conduct an in-depth survey to understand international students' needs and queries.
- Expand student support networks across different year groups and Engineering Departments.
- Push for more resources dedicated towards career advice and assistance for graduating students.
Please vote for me, and I will be your voice in the ICU.
