Dharun Srirathan
Having been on a respiratory medicine placement at Chelsea and Westminster hospital, I was enthralled by how important respiratory medicine is as a specialty, encouraging me to run for events officer.
By running for events officer, I have the opportunity to spread awareness and raise interest in the work that is accomplished through respiratory medicine. Having chaired the TedX talks at my school, I have experience in being able to organise the different elements involved in running a successful event, providing me with invaluable organisational, leadership and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, having organised multiple fundraising events to raise money for a charity in Sri Lanka, I was also able to develop my communication skills as well as my ability to adapt by overcoming challenges posed during the running of these successful events.
Some ideas I had for future events that could be run by ICSM respiratory medicine society include:
- Having cardiothoracic and pulmonologists come in to have a Q&A session about their career to encourage people to get into their field
- Introducing a lecture series run by pulmonologists on several interesting respiratory related cases that they may have seen over their time working as a doctor
- Running interactive, hands-on workshops where students get to practice respiratory medicine skills such as intubating, on dummies
I believe that all these skills, as well as my passion and commitment to respiratory medicine society, will ensure that I will be able to run many successful events to help grow the awareness surrounding this field.
