Ophthalmology: Research and Opportunities Officer

Hello everyone! My name is Jennifer, and I’m a fourth-year medical student who is passionate about all things Ophthalmology: from public health outreach programmes, to clinical research. I’ve been part of Ophthalmology Society since 2020, and have really enjoyed volunteering for society events such as EyeHeroes. As such, I would love to help continue to grow the portfolio of events that we have to offer!

As part of my campaign, I propose to expand the society's research opportunities and networks. This will include an exclusive 1-1 research mentoring programme over 6 months. Other events include a hackathon series where students and vision researchers work together to formulate research project proposals targeting unmet needs in ophthalmology.

I also endeavour to strengthen collaborations with external organisations. Examples would be joining the inaugural Medical Student Societies Meeting with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, or working with the British Collaboration of Ophthalmology Student Societies. Partnering with optometry and pharmaceutical organisations will also help diversify our sources of sponsorship, making our events more accessible to students.

At a national level, I am a committee member for Women in Vision UK, a network of ophthalmologists and optometrists. I am actively involved in organising events and conferences. At Imperial, I've also led events for MedED. As such, I hope to contribute my organisational and promotional skills to coordinate future events. All in all, I would love to work together with the rest of the society to give more students early exposure to this fantastic specialty!
